UNICEF Foto des Jahres 2019
UNICEF Photo of the Year 2019, Tondo Manila Philippines.
This group of children between 10-12 years living in a squatter at Manila Bay is collecting plastic every day before or after going to school. So their houses are located directly near the sea they swim in the polluted dirty waters risking their lives. They earn a little bit money with selling the plastic to so called junk shops, which recycle the waste. This is a common income in Tondo, one of the largest slums in the world. Hundred years ago there has been beaches here, but now it is a so called Danger Zone with rising sea levels due to the climate change. The families belong to the Urban Poor, the poorest families in the Philippines.
